“Dark fungi” is a term used to describe fungal species that are difficult to identify because they lack observable structures and are hard to grow in a lab:

Future Researchers are using a large database to catalog the DNA of dark fungi so that they can collaborate on studies and inspire conservation efforts.

Characteristics Dark fungi are also known as “dark taxa” or “dark matter fungi”. They are primarily detected using DNA sequencing, particularly environmental metabarcoding.

Importance Scientists believe that dark fungi perform vital functions in ecosystems, such as breaking down organic matter and recycling nutrients. However, they are often ignored in important contexts, such as species counts and legalization, because they lack a taxonomic name.

Challenges The International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants requires that a physical specimen of a fungus be identified and preserved in a fungarium before it can be officially named. Scientists have collected DNA samples of thousands of new fungus species, but they haven’t been able to collect physical samples or grow them in a lab.
